The benefits of LASIK laser eye surgery include a pain free recovery, quick restoration of eyesight and better results for severe short sight. The inner eye is not pierced during the procedure and stitches are not required.
The Treatment
LASIK laser eye surgery is performed in sterile conditions. The surgeon applies anaesthetic eye drops to eliminate any pain and a small 'clip' is used to keep the eyelid open. A suction ring is then applied to the eye to enable the flap to be made by a device called the Microkeratome (this step can also now be performed by a Femtosecond laser).
The laser is applied in the same manner as for Epi-LASEK laser eye surgery. The treatment takes approximately 20 minutes (a special tracker locks onto the iris and the laser follows the eye if you move) and patients find the whole process quick and simple. After treatment the eye is covered with a plastic shield to prevent you from rubbing it
After Treatment
On the day of LASIK treatment, please bring a pair of dark sunglasses to wear for your journey home as your eyes will feel sensitive to light. We strongly recommend that you bring a friend/relative with you so they can accompany you home after treatment. While it is not expected that you will experience any significant pain, you may need to take your own usual analgesic tablets. Eye drops will be given to apply during the first few days and clearer vision will return very quickly, usually within 24 hours.
Possible Side Effects
Complications are rare but can occur and may require further laser or surgical treatment. If anything more severe than mild discomfort is experienced, you must return to the clinic as soon as possible or call the 24 hour emergency helpline.
The flap side effects are listed on the Consent Form, which you will be asked to complete and sign prior to undergoing LASIK treatment. These effects will reduce gradually during the healing process and only rarely persist.
Consultation and Treatment
LASIK surgery usually takes place on the same day as the consultation and depends on the doctors' advice. You may not be able to drive for a few hours after the consultation, as advised by the Doctor.
